Drywall Patches

What are they?

Small holes usually regarded as smaller than 12” in diameter.

Why are patches priced differently to larger holes?

A large part of drywall repair is down to the setup of the job. Doing a repair of 1” up to about 36” take a very similar amount of time to complete.

Why do drywall repairs get cheaper per square foot the larger they are?

Once a repair goes above a 30 square foot size certain economies of scale start to come into play. The materials are now being consumed in the quantities they are manufactured in rather than fractions of.

How is a drywall patch repaired?

Firstly, every repair is different to the last so this is not an exact science, some times more or less is needed at each step. This is a rough break down of what will likely be done.

Step 1. The drywall hole is squared off to a regular size a patch can be cut for.

Step 2. The new section of sheetrock is installed as tightly as possible to the hole and fastened in place. We usually use a special connector to connect the existing with the new. These connectors are very strong and save having to make even bigger holes or repairing using pieces of wood as battens.

Step 3. A “tape” or “mesh” is put along the seams of the new and the old this acts as the bond and helps to prevent any cracking of the repair.

Step 4. “Mud” as is affectionately named in the industry is applied, it is made of gypsum mixed with water and additives so it can be worked before the dry starts.

Step 5. The patch may require several coats of varying thickness to complete the patch. At this point the repair will still be noticeable as will be slightly pronounced from the surface of the wall.

Step 6. The patch is sanded with ether sand paper or occasionally wet sanded using a sanding sponge.

Step 7. The patch is inspected to ensure that it is flat and correct. A texture can then be applied if need be. If it is to remain smooth it needs to dry and then be primed ready for painting in.
